Shin Splints: A Quick Guide

As an athlete, it is common to be exposed to different injuries. One of these injuries is the shin splint. It is characterized by an ache on the shin which is located below the knee, and in front of the leg. In diagnosing shin splint, it is usually differentiated from stress fractures. The pain of shin pain is more generalized while the pain of the stress fracture is localized to an area. In the morning, the pain of shin splints usually become worse due to the tightening of the soft tissue over the night time unlike the pain of stress fracture which is alleviated in the morning because the leg is able to rest over the night.

Once the pain of the patient eases, you may allow patient to continue his activities but with some precautions. He must not do them excessively. Motion control shoes. This is most commonly used shoes. One of the mechanism of shin splint is the overpronation. This type of shoes prevents such mechanism. It encompasses medial support, and foot bridges. It controls the motion of the foot and leg.

Other than shoes, there are also other things that can help support the affected leg. One of these is the compression sock which acts to increase the circulation of blood in to the muscles of lower leg to reduce inflammation.
